ABCs at ABCD Presentation: 25 Ways to Deliver Ongoing Staff Training without Pulling Everyone in for Training
ABCD’s Jeanne Ashmore welcomed Sara Sherman once again to our program, this time to present her 25 (actually 28) tricks to keep staff in training all the time. The number one thing people complain about is the lack of training and the number two thing they complain about is having to go to training.
Ongoing training is one of the major ways to ameliorate the root cause of non-compliance, lack of ongoing training is a root cause of non-compliance.
In social services, we are helpers, but we don’t always empower. Sara provided frames for how supervisors can achieve the intended outcome with staff – to execute on their own. When we introduce information, it is critical to know that people must hear it at least 7 times and as much as 13-15 times. She also provided participants with how staff who are not well trained behave. Untrained staff who do not feel competent in their jobs have high turnover rates or they stay.
The 28 tricks brought creativity, play, role reversal and the people that we serve into the mix. Some great suggestions!
