ABCs at ABCD
ABCD members once again welcomed Maxine (Mickey) Neuhauser, Esq. of Epstein, Becker, and Green to learn about new and renewed labor and employment laws and regulations that should be on their radar, Employment & the Workplace News to Know.
The information Mickey provided included the
- Proposed federal increase to the salary threshold for exempt employees. “We are in unsettled waters.” This is an opportunity for employes to review their applications and to consider the possible implications for their agency budget.
- New NLRB standards affecting employee handbooks. Though policies included in employee handbooks are not contracts, they are legal documents and are not confidential. A good handbook will reduce an agency’s legal risk.
- NJ Temporary Workers Bill of Rights Law. This does apply to personal care and service organizations which hire through staffing organizations.
- NJ Unemployment increasing reporting of obligations and penalties.
- Federal requirement to accommodate employee pregnancy and lactation. NJ already requires these.
- Teleworking employees are entitled to everything that on -site employees receive.
As Mickey has stated in the past, “In the world of employment law, nobody cares that you are a non-profit.”
And it wouldn’t be a Mickey presentation without her final words of advice, “Good luck and be careful out there!”
“Enjoying what you do is the foundation to creating a meaningful career and satisfying life. I have had the good fortune of a rewarding and purposeful career—and, happily, one that my wonderful family is also proud of.”
