ABCs at ABCD Presentation: Communication and Conflict Resolution
“Without different ideas, leaders wouldn’t be choosing the best strategies that are accommodating and have the greatest impact.” On November 8 Jeanne Ashmore welcomed ABCD members attending Jonathan Meagher-Zayas and Nicole Dama of Equity Warrior Strategies, LLC zoom presentation, Communication and Conflict Resolution. Jon and Nicole walked the group through the principles of conflict, causes, conflict solutions, the difference between structural and interpersonal conflict, power dynamics, types of power, how to navigate power and differences, and conflict management styles (turtle, shark, teddy bear, fox, and owl). Finally, solving conflict requires cooperation, not competition. The goal is to find an outcome that everyone can accept. In this regard, it is helpful to focus on people’s interests and values rather than their specific position.

Nicole Dama has been a trainer and facilitator for over 14 years with the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI). She is a graduate of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities and most recently worked with the Leadership Consortium on developing the training, “Leading Great Teams.” Currently, Nicole works for the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals as an Office and Communications Manager working on events and programming to elevate the status of direct support professionals.
